Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.

The former director's attorney submitted the response on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the proceedings thrown out for several reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after the former president pushed his attorney general to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald told the judge they aimed to present several legal requests to terminate the proceedings before a court case, claiming the government's case was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully assigned to take over the proceedings.

James Comey's legal matter was originally overseen by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into a different political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his partner, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration terminated.

Following the reading to the magistrate recite his rights and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he grasped the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was terminated about a few months into the former president's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the time, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey triggered a backlash from liberal politicians when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to criticism from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert the former director provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he deceived the upper house by saying he had not approved a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to news outlets data about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, block and slow" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media Mr Comey shared to his online platform after he was charged, he said he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have been aware for years that there are costs to challenging Mr Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."

"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

These allegations against the former director came after the former president shared on online platforms insisting on his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
