A American border officer has testified he could detect through his body armor the force of a deli item thrown at him by a DC demonstrator, who has faced court proceedings for criminal charge.

Immigration and customs agent the officer testified to the court panel the snack "shattered all over him" and he "could smell the onions and yellow sauce" on his work clothing.

Neither side disputes that the defendant, thirty-seven, did in fact lob obscenities and a prepared food item at authorities assigned by the former president to secure the nation's capital in August.

The occurrence was filmed on video and became popular online, making the accused a symbol of protest in the federal district to Trump.

Government prosecutors initially tried to obtain major offense allegations against Mr Dunn, but a grand jury chose not to prosecute him.

Trump's sending of armed forces to Washington DC this season caused anger from some of the DC citizens, who viewed it as a politicisation of the armed forces.

Based on court papers, Mr Dunn approached a group of officers at about late evening on August 10, calling them "authoritarians" and yelling: "Why are you present? I don't want you in my city!"

The trial witnessed a demonstration from the agent on Tuesday as he testified against the accused.

"I sensed it through my ballistic vest," he said of the food's collision, noting that an onion string remained from his official equipment and mustard stained his clothing.

The accused's lawyer, Julia Gatto, argued in her initial argument that throwing the food item was a "harmless gesture that did not, could not, result in harm".

But state lawyer the prosecutor maintained Mr Dunn must be considered responsible.

"Regardless of identity, you cannot simply hurling objects at others because you're angry," the prosecutor declared.

Subsequent to the alleged assault was revealed, Mr Dunn was dismissed from his position as a paralegal in the government law department.
